5 Great Habits That Will Change Your Life in 2023

Do you have any bad habits that you want to leave in 2022?

And incorporate new healthy habits in this next leap year?!

Well I have good news for you, below I have strategically picked one of the top 5 habits that are a must for a serious change this year.

It may take a while to break the bad habits and adapt in new ones. However, being aware of your bad habits and realizing what a healthy change looks like is very beneficial. And this post will help with that.

Invest In Yourself

Make a habit of investing in yourself, because you are worth it!

My life-long advice to anyone young or old is to invest in yourself consistently, never stop developing and becoming a better person. This is seriously a forever habit that everyone should have. Investing in yourself can look like and consist of…

  • Setting out time everyday for an hour to read a book rather than binge watching your favorite TV series on Netflix for hours at a time (I admit I been guilty of this)
  • Listening to a really good podcast on your way to work, school or the gym
  • Taking an online course or any course to learn something new. Gain more skills on top of the ones you already have and print out that certification! (it would look really good on a resume)
  • Learning a new language
  • Waking up before everyone else and getting things done

Starting two or three side hustles, figure out creative ways to boost your income

The list goes on and on and truth be told this whole article can include ideas of investing in yourself. Just you clicking on this post and reading it is investing in yourself, because why else would you be interested in this post if it wasn’t to help you!

Investing in yourself is the best investment you will ever make!

“When you invest in yourself consistently you automatically are setting yourself up for a life-time of success. Your future self will thank you for it later.”

Plan

Make a habit for planning for your life, your future, your tomorrow

My recommendation for planning for things is to create a summary or outline of what you want your life to look like. This can be by creating something visual like a vision board or writing it down on paper.

So, if it is just planning for short-term things such as, daily, weekly or monthly plans then a calendar is a must! It really helps to keep track of your schedule. Detailed planners that contain sections for goals, visions, to- do’s and reminders are even better!

Whenever I didn’t have or utilize my planners I felt lost and had no direction on what my days consisted of. Consequently, I was losing track of appointments and important meetings.

I suggest taking a planner with you everywhere you go so that way you can quickly jot things down (that should be a habit in itself haha!). Even a calendar or planner app on your phone helps too! Whatever works for you, however I prefer a physical planner and calendar.

If you want a clear picture and a long- term plan of what you want your life to look like then I highly advocate for creating a 1 year, 3 year or even a 5 year plan (Whichever makes sense to you!)

Creating these long-term plans benefits you in a way that will get you motivated to taking action NOW in the PRESENT to accomplish everything that needs to be done to get you to where you eventually want to be. It takes hard work, consistency and persistence to create your dream life.

Planning takes form in various ways:

Visualizing/Scripting

Setting goals

Having a planner/calendar

Designing a vision board

You can have, do and be whatever it is you want as long as you create a plan that will get you there!

Along with planning includes taking action…

“Planning is bringing the future into the present so that you can do something about it now.” -Alan Lakein

Priorities

Make having priorities a habit, it will keep you accountable and on top of your game for the rest of the year

Having priorities are great, because it means you have important tasks and responsibilities to tend to. One of the benefits of having priorities is that it allows you to utilize your time wisely, because you have things to accomplish and it leaves less room to procrastinate.

The most important thing is being aware of what your priorities are and how to manage them all.

Here are some examples of things that can be a priority in your life:

Relationships

Studying and doing homework

Health

Work

* Tip: I know when I used to prioritize I would set out what to do for the day but for each thing I didn’t set a time-frame to complete it. Blocking out time for certain things is helpful and helps with focus.

If you spend a lot of time on one thing, and you have other tasks to get done it could delay the amount of time needed for that next project getting done.

I want you to keep that in mind!

Save Money

You must gain control over your money or the lack of it will forever control you". -Dave Ramsey

“You must gain control over your money or the lack of it will forever control you.” -Dave Ramsey

It is never too late to start saving money. One thing I want to get into this year is cash envelopes!

2020 should definitely be the year for everyone to start utilizing cash envelopes or developing a good and simple strategy that will help them not only save money, but be smarter about spending and how much one should spend.

Another habit in this category should be training ourselves to not spend money we don’t have (For those of us who struggle with this)

I also believe with the help of cash envelopes it can help with learning to start paying cash for things rather than swiping.

Not to say that swiping a credit card or debit card is a bad thing. However, it can be dangerous when you’re just swiping away not knowing what your spending your money on and how much your spending on something that you probably cant afford out your budget.

It is easy to just swipe away! But being mindful about it is key! Some examples of what cash envelopes can be categorized into are…

Groceries

Vacation

Take-out

Clothing

And for each category you can set aside a certain dollar amount specifically for that category.

Timeliness

Be punctual

Time is of the essence, and this can account for a lot of things. To add on from the last category of saving money is being on time with paying your bills! That can also save you money. It is crucial to be on time for things especially for a meeting, a class, a date etc… Being on time…

Actually, being early says a lot about a person. Being on time is really being “late”, and being early is really being on time. If this is something you struggle with it is okay, being aware of our weaknesses helps us to be stronger and better.

Advice #1:

I would suggest practicing being early for small things that may not have huge consequences. For instance, meeting a friend for coffee.

(not to say that is anything less important than a business meeting or something, but im sure your friend will be more understanding than a boss)

or even just waking up at a certain time that way you know you are working towards being prompt and a punctual individual.

The reason why being early is highly recommended is because it allows you to have more time to settle for wherever you’re at. Also, it gives you time to prepare for the occasion.

I remember when I was in college and I was meeting someone who was offering me an internship position. I made sure to be early and on time.

However, I was waiting in the lobby for this person way past the time we were supposed to be meeting. She was the one who was actually late!

Advice #2:

Just know that when it comes to you as an employee and/or you are looking to be a service to someone else for their business or company…

Know that it is okay for them to be late, but not you.

Someone I assisted for told me that it is okay for the boss or employer to be late, but not the employee or worker to be late. Everyone may have their agreements or disagreements with this statement, however it is true and makes sense!

If you are always late or have a problem with it. It will be you who gets fired not the boss.

I hope that makes sense!

Moral of the story is, is to not be late no matter who it is. Being a punctual individual shows people you care about their time. They will take you more seriously as a reliable and dependent person to count on.

And that conludes this post!

Thank you for reading. I would love to know in the comments which habit you’re most looking forward to developing in your life starting this year, or even your experiences with any habits.

Happy habiting, and wishing you a successful 2023!
